Many people who don’t understand the nature of astrology claim it is a “one size fits all” proposition. This could not be farther from the reality. It’s important to understand exactly what astrology is and how it evolved.
Knowledge of the heavens can define the relationship between humanity, nature and a specific person. The elements reflect personality types, preferences, and even the health of each zodiac sign. The elements also correspond to possible reactions and patterns in individual personalities and the larger universe.
Astrology is an in-depth science.
Each of the 12 sun signs has very different traits and unique identifiers. Each zodiac sign is directly associated with the sun’s location at the time of birth. Each sun sign is also linked to a planet and an element.
Just as the planets exercise an influence, so do the elements and their polarity. To further break it down, each person’s chart has a combination of planets that directly impact them.
Not as general as you thought, is it?
The good news is you don’t have to get every single detail from an individual chart to gain a lot of insight. Take a look at the role of the elements, their state and their polarity.
The Concept of Elements in Astrology
The elements are the basis of Astrology, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the natural philosophy of the ancient world and modern physics.
There are five elements in TCM. They are comparable to the four elements referred to in Astrology.
Elements of Chinese Medicine Astrology Elements:
- Fire (火）
- Earth (土）
- Metal (金）
- Water (水）
- Wood (木）
Each element appears in nature in a certain way. The form that energy takes in nature is reflected in astrology in personality, appearance and actions.
Each sign is closely identified with one of the elements. These elements are Fire, Earth, Water and Air. The elements are also known as the four “modifying” agents of a sun sign.
States of the Elements and What They Mean
The elements all manifest themselves in three specific ways or states. The states are Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Just as each element impacts and influences the sign it is linked to, the state of the element needs to be considered.
Cardinal: this state is primary it leads, begins or initiates.
Fixed: this state is set, does not change easily and has one focus.
Mutable: this is the most changeable, mutable, and flexible state.
The universe is made up of a constant interaction of these four elements as it relates to each of the sun sign traits. The elements’ characteristics are all made up of different types of moving energy. Regardless of what form it takes, it expresses itself in the zodiac.
The 12 zodiac signs can be organized into four “triplicities” of 3 signs each, based on their elements polarity and state.
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire signs are never dull. They are dynamic, charismatic and open. The fire element is about enthusiasm, passion and inspiration. Fire lights up the dark. It can also burn.
Flashes of insight and drama drive those whose charts are touched by fire. This element can also display itself with “fiery” emotions including simmering frustration or anger. Fire signs must learn not to burn too many bridges or burn themselves out.
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
The earth signs usually are stable and steady. They are influenced by the sensory world. Those that are “tied to the earth” rely on the five senses. Earth signs typically finish what they start and stay productive.
They may become too fond of creature comforts like food and drink. The earth element must learn to avoid getting falling into unhealthy patterns. They can truly learn that change is possible when they let go of their resistance.
Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs are cool and curious. They are the great communicators of the zodiac. The air element never met a problem it couldn’t analyze. They often seem like they are “above it all”, but just when you think they are all about high-level interactions and thoughts, you see them in action at a social event.
They are witty, bright, social and sometimes aloof. The danger for the air element signs is that they may need to get grounded. They are truly not uncaring; they just may be out of touch with their feelings. It’s important that they learn how to turn the thinking and dreaming into more “down to earth action.”
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water signs can be intensely emotional, intuitive, and caring. They are sensitive and nurturing. People-oriented careers and healing professions work best for them. The flow of the water element manifests itself in intuition and a desire to understand and help other people.
Many with the water element are highly creative, artistic dreamers. The problem with all that water is that it can get off-balanced. The lesson of the water element is to avoid being drowned by emotions. They can also be the secret keepers who may hide things in a fog. The key is to learn to use intuition to focus the sensitivity as solutions rather than emotions.
What Does Polarity Mean?
Each sign of the zodiac can also be seen through the lens of polarity (Positive, Negative or Masculine, Feminine).
Polarity is simply a way to describe how the elemental energy reacts. Positive and negative polarity can be compared to the charge in a battery. In this case, positive and negative do not indicate “bad” or “good”.
The signs of the zodiac can also be grouped according to polarity (Positive, Negative or Masculine, Feminine).
Water and Earth signs are energetically Negative (Feminine or Yin).
Fire and Air signs are energetically Positive (Masculine or Yang).
The Masculine (Positive) energy is extroverted, direct and outgoing. The Feminine (Negative) energy is more introverted, indirect or inward.
People with a predominate fire element are most compatible with people who have the air element present in their zodiac sign. Think about how fire and air react to each other. The air feeds the fire. They inspire each other.
People with the water element are drawn to people who have the earth element present. Water and earth are much more compatible than fire and water. Remember that water puts out the fire. They don’t get along!
The more you know about astrological signs, the better you can understand yourself and other people.
