Motherly, careful Cancers are the nurturers of the zodiac. They are among the best at appealing to and inspiring the emotions, particularly when there’s an anxiety to be soothed or a pain to be eased. Why, then, would such a tender soul be associated with such a pinchy, disagreeable animal? Consider the hermit crab. A hermit crab, unlike many other species, is unable to grow its own complete exoskeleton. With a softer body than its naturally hard-shelled counterparts and no shell of its own into which to retreat, it is extremely vulnerable to harm. Thus, as protection from predators and injury, hermit crabs choose the discarded shells of other animals to make their homes. Much like these inventive creatures, Cancers come into this world with few natural defenses against emotional hurt or deception and must build their own walls lest some callous individual pierce their soft underbellies.
When Cancers come out of their shells, so to speak, there are bound to be surprises as parts of their nature they didn’t reveal are made known once they’ve determined that a particular space or person is safe. They can be very silly and whimsical when their defenses are down, or conversely, this fun side can itself be another line of defense.
The truly critical element to a Cancer individual’s well-being is not self-protection, but the ability to adapt. Like the hermit crab’s fragile body, a human’s needs and desires change and grow over the years, and a shell that once provided a safe, comfortable home may, in time, become constricting and limited in its ability to continue protecting its inhabitant. Where others are concerned, there is such a thing as over-nurturing, and it’s important to maintain the self-awareness necessary to avoid codependency and smothering which leave all parties drained and unwell. Learning to set healthy boundaries while also opening doors and leaving room to grow is key to the soul journey of those born under the sign of the Crab.
