The tarot knights are often problematical when they turn up in a reading, so we’re going to examine what it means to have one in your life. We’re focusing on boyfriends and partners but, of course, a Knight could also be your Dad, little brother or a friend. And don’t forget, although we talk about ‘he’, as Knights were almost always male in the days when the realm was defended by guys on horses, a Knight can be of any gender.
What is a Tarot Knight?
Back in the day, when Britain was feudal, divided into realms, medieval knights were warriors who had proved themselves in battle. They were rewarded with land and charged with looking after and defending their domain. They also had to be ready to heed the call of battle at any time when the King decided he wanted to invade some far off land. Although not viewed as very high up the nobility scale, knights developed a code of chivalry. They had to swear to remain loyal to the values of honor, loyalty, and faith.
In the tarot, there are four knights who rank between the young Pages and the matriarchal Queens. Knights have their code of conduct as perceived through the lens of their suit. The suit, as with all the cards, is their defining modus operandi. It dictates how they behave, how they view the world and how they interact with others.
Before we delve into the personality traits of our four gorgeous nobles, it’s important to understand that the appearance of a knight in a tarot reading may not automatically signify an actual person. It could also be a call to action, a mission to accomplish, or even that the seeker should take on board some of those knightly qualities themselves.
Knight of Cups
So you’re in love with a Knight of Cups. Congratulations. I bet he makes you feel like a Queen. He’ll look out for you, take care of you and treat you gently. He loves being in love. The Knight of Cups is romantic, generous, courageous and puts you first all the time. He talks, he listens, he shares his feelings. You probably feel as if you have hit the romantic jackpot.
Okay, so he isn’t perfect. Who is? Sometimes you just wish he would be less, well, immature. He loves his mother. Every boy should, but when he calls her every night before you snuggle down together, you might feel a little ill-at-ease. He’ll grow out of it, right? When you have kids? Maybe.
Except he doesn’t. There you are with your visions of you both taking care of your little royal offspring, but more often than not, you are left, literally holding the baby. Your Knight of Cups is not keen on changing diapers or getting up in the deepest, darkest night to warm the refrigerated breast milk you so carefully expressed.
You have two options when in love with a Knight of Cups. The first is to revel in the romance, enjoy your time together and then move on when you are looking for something a little more serious. The second option is to bully him into being a 50/50 partner. Sometimes that will work as he suddenly realizes that he needs to man up. Often, though, he’ll run back to mama until he finds a ‘nice girl’ to replace you on that pedestal.
The Code of Conduct of the Knight of Cups
The Knight of Cups is chivalrous to a fault. He is polite, presentable and usually quiet. His soft spot is his emotional state. He can often be spotted with a quivering lower lip while watching a sad movie, especially one featuring cute animals.
Knight of Wands
The Knight of Wands is the complete opposite to the Knight of Cups. You’ve fallen hard and fast for his charm, his looks, and his confidence. When he looks at you, you melt in the heat of his gaze. Passion rules your relationship, and you can’t keep your hands off each other. That’s good, right?
Unfortunately, the Knight of Wands is the one who interprets the knights’ code of conduct in the way that works best for him. Loyalty? Of course, at least while you’re still in the same room. Chivalry? Yes, especially when someone is looking. Not so much when you are on your own. Fatherhood? Well, if he didn’t make a run for it when you waved the pregnancy test at him, then it’s possible that becoming a father is the making of him. Once he sees that little replica of himself, he’ll be smitten. So don’t write him off completely.
Code of Conduct of the Knight of Wands
The Knight of Wands is courageous and brave. He’s also charming, loquacious and passionate about all he does. He can be a bit loud and shouty – you’ll see that he takes after his dad in that respect. Tame him and he’ll turn into your King.
Knight of Swords
You are very attracted to the Knight of Swords, although you don’t always know why. On paper, it shouldn’t work. He’s focused, dedicated to his mission, has his eye on the goal and isn’t charming unless he makes an effort. There is something about him, though. Maybe it’s his laser intellect? Or his cutting wit? When he does turn his attention to you, he makes you shiver with delight – and a tiny frisson of fear.
So you can make this work if you can accommodate his ambitions. You know you will have to play second fiddle to any mission that he’s waging. You may be left on your own, but he’ll always come back to you. As a father, he is pretty good. He’ll define both your roles early on so you’ll be left in no doubt which tasks are yours and which are his. If it works for you, then it will work for both of you. This one ages well, becomes softer and gentler as he matures.
Code of Conduct of the Knight of Swords
The Knight of Swords is clear-sighted, faithful and brave. His single-mindedness and determination are legendary. His sense of humor is unique and can be hurtful as he revels in his cleverness. If you have a thick skin, you can handle him.
Knight of Pentacles
Are you bored with your Knight of Pentacles? Never. C’mon, it takes a good woman to bring out the best in this one. Maybe he’s a bit cold? Distant? You haven’t found the key to unlocking his furnace yet. There is so much more to this knight than he shows. There is nothing superficial about this guy. He takes his code of conduct to his heart and lives it every day.
Once he falls in love with you, he will never, ever fall out again. He is reliable, hard-working and utterly dependable. His loyalty is unquestionable. He may lack finesse but makes up for it in dedication. He learns well, so you can teach him exactly how you’d like him to treat you, romantically-speaking. Fatherhood does him good. He blossoms when he’s able to connect with his child. When he can let a little playfulness take over once in a while.
Code of Conduct of the Knight of Pentacles
This knight is dutiful, hard-working, loyal, faithful and dependable. He sometimes comes over as dull, but don’t you believe it. His earthy passions just require a little digging out. Are you up for the task?
