Relationships can be beautiful, but not every one of them is easy. Sometimes they require a lot of work to keep them healthy and functioning for both partners. You might not be perfectly happy in your current relationship but, before you give up on it, know that you could create your perfect relationship right where you are. Using a deck tarot cards, you can begin to turn a floundering relationship into a rewarding one.
A tarot card is an extraordinary point of focus. It’s not powerful in itself, being merely an image printed on card. However, that image is capable of focusing your own energy, thought and emotion in such a way that the universe has to respond to your desire. You don’t have to share this process with anyone, least of all your partner. This is an exercise to carry out alone. You will need a deck of tarot cards, a quiet place to lay out the cards and a journal. If you want to enhance the process with a candle or incense, feel free to do so. Anything that feels calming and powerful is helpful.
You will create your perfect relationship over the course of three weeks. Put aside an hour once a week.
Week 1 of Creating Your Perfect Relationship
When you are ready and settled, take your journal – it can be a simple text document on your computer if you like. Write out a brief description of the relationship as it is currently. Be factual, don’t assign blame, just keep it simple. Say what you think is wrong and what the difficulties are. When you’ve finished, put it aside.
Now, think about what your perfect relationship would look like. Can you see how happy you could be with your partner? Pretend all their faults have been smoothed away. See yourself accepting of his or her personality quirks. Visualize your deepening relationship. Feel a sense of security, fun and happiness wash through you. If it helps, see your relationship as a golden cup. It’s a little bit tarnished right now, but you can lovingly bring it back to its former beauty.
Take your tarot deck and hold it in both hands, keep that warm, happy feeling flowing through your hands and into the cards.
Go through the cards and pick out the Star, Six of Pentacles and Temperance. Lay them out in that order.
Look at the Star. It is the symbol of hope, love and peace. It holds the vision of all you want from a loving relationship. Feel how the relationship can be nurtured by pouring love into it. The Star is where you are right now. Hopeful and peaceful, knowing that whatever the outcome, you will be happy.
Turn to the Six of Pentacles. This card symbolizes the tension in a relationship. ‘Tension’ in this context isn’t negative, it’s simply the push-pull aspect of two people interacting. Sometimes there’s give and sometimes take. See how this works? How one gives to the other. When it’s better to surrender rather than push back harder. Visualize your points of disagreement melting away as you learn what is important and what is not. Do you want to be always right, or do you want to be happy?
Look at Temperance. Temperance represents balance and a harmonious mix. It is intermingling, cooperating, and each part of the relationship being enhanced by the others. Good chemistry, in other words. Visualize good chemistry working in your relationship.
Look at the cards again, build up that feeing of hope, certainty and security. Hold it briefly as you see yourself and your partner in your mind’s eye. Then let it go. Put the cards away.
As you go through the next week, notice examples of when the qualities of the three cards are demonstrated in your relationship by either of you. Make a note of them in your journal.
Week 2 of Creating Your Perfect Relationship
Follow the instructions for Week 1, including journaling about the current state of the relationship. Notice any improvements.
Pick out the Eight of Pentacles, Two of Cups and the Sun cards.
Look at the Eight of Pentacles. This is usually a card about learning and honing skills and often related to work situations. However, recreating your relationship requires this exact same dedication, so visualize yourself molding and sculpting the relationship, turning it into the mirror of your desired outcome.
Now the Two of Cups. This card often represents the beginning stages of a relationship, when that spark of attraction changes into a deeper connection. This is what you are aiming for, to rekindle that level of involvement. To be fascinated by each other; to be interested in what the other has to say; how he or she feels. As though every day is a chance to get to know them afresh.
The final card this week is the Sun. The Sun holds the power of improving every aspect of your life. There is light, brightness, warmth and positive energy. Feel it permeate your body and mind, then direct that energy into the cup of your relationship. Feel energized.
Again journal as often as you can during the following days. Make notes of how the relationship is progressing. Remember, you still don’t need to discuss what you are doing with your partner – you are not trying to change them, rather you are focused on what you two have together and making it better.
Week 3 of Creating Your Perfect Relationship
You know what to do… write out the current state of your relationship. Compare the difference between Week 1 and now. This week, you are going to pull out three cards that represent your increasing closeness. They will help keep the good momentum going.
Select the Ace of Cups, the Lovers and the Empress.
The Ace of Cups shows the beautiful, golden cup that represents your relationship. It is whole, divine and glorious. See it as fully replenished, with each partner contributing to its future well-being. The positive love emotions flow from it, and it is continually refilled by your attention.
The Lovers card represents you two individuals coming together to create a beautiful partnership. All is balanced; that tension is completely natural and necessary to keep it so. Passion is balanced by empathy and caring. Feel it.
The final card is the Empress. She represents growth and abundance. This card focuses your energy so that the relationship continues to grow and change as you as individuals grow and change. The Empress is about nurturing… and also about simple, down-to-earth practicalities. She is about laughing, loving, and wringing every moment of goodness from life. Let her energy infuse your relationship. Hold the vision and mentally pour it into your golden cup.
You can repeat this exercise whenever you want to reinvigorate your feelings for your partner. You can also go through the tarot deck to find other cards which hold the qualities you want to add into the relationship.

- Lasting fulfilment – Ten of Cups
- Children – Six of Cups
