He was so easy to fall in love with. His charm bowled you over. His looks, his charisma were irresistible. You still love him, but it’s becoming more difficult. You can’t seem to keep him at your side. Sure he always comes back to you eventually, yet that’s not what you want is it? It looks like you’ve fallen in love with a Knight of Wands.
A note about gender: the tarot Knights can be any gender yet, they almost always tend to be male. Having said that, there are probably many females who can identify with Knight of Wands characteristics. For the sake of convenience and brevity, we’re going with ‘he’.
Characteristics of a Knight of Wands Type
The Knight of Wands is active. He’s a do-er, not a thinker. He’s always looking for adventure and fun. If a situation needs shaking up, he’s the one to do it. Need someone innovative and not afraid to take risks? He’s your man. Want a loyal, hard-working, consistent employee – the Knight of Wands is definitely not your man.
This Knight is like Winnie-the-Pooh’s good friend, Tigger. He’s bouncy and energetic. He lives in the moment. He forgets the past easily, and cares nothing for the future. Everything is now, now, now. He burns bright, but he burns out fast.
He says he needs his freedom, but what he really means is that he can’t make a commitment, whether to a job or a long-term relationship.
The Knight of Wands is bold, adventurous, exciting and spontaneous. He’s always looking for the next thrill, and as soon as he’s bored, he’ll move on to the next big exciting thing. He gathers an entourage of hangers-on, and they bask in his reflected glory. He proclaims himself as a leader, yet he cannot demonstrate all the necessary qualities of a leader.
His strength lies in his ability to charm and then to motivate and inspire others to action. He’s a bit of a rebel, but he also feels a pull toward his innate sense of duty. This won’t appear until he reaches a certain level of maturity. In other words, like the boy becomes a man; the Knight becomes a King. And that will happen at any age between 20 and 90.
The Knight of Wands’ Temperament
This Knight’s ruling element is fire, and he is associated with the Zodiac fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. So there’s no doubt about it, he’s going to have a temper. This can present as irritation, anger, stubbornness, and even tantrums. Unfortunately, unlike his older and wiser relative, the King of Wands, he is sometimes unable to control it. He will go to the furthest limits of the fire emotions. That means that anyone caught up in the flames is going to get burned.
A quick word here about secondary elements. Each rank of Court card has their own element: Pages are Earth, Knights are Air, Queens are Water and Kings are Fire. That makes the Knight of Swords ‘fire of air’. Fire needs air to thrive and burn so while his primary drive is enthusiasm and passion and all that goes with them, his supporting drive is thought and communication. This means that there is a lot going on in his head all the time. And it is this air element that helps him make decisions and be his charming, persuasive self.
The Knight of Wands and Money
He has a curious relationship with money. He seems to attract money easily, but loses it just as easily. He’s quite a generous sort so is happy to spend his money on giving you a good time. Until you dump him and then he’s likely to send you a bill. That’s wounded pride. As he has no thought for the future, he thinks his finances will take care of themselves. If his family are wealthy, and if they have any sense, they will keep him on a tight leash, financially. If he is poor, then his charm usually carries him through life, with other people bearing his expenses. He has to watch out for addictions, especially gambling – he has a sense of invincibility, which is often misplaced.
The Knight of Wands in Love
In matters of love, The Knight of Wands is a butterfly. He flits from love affair to love affair. He falls in love, or rather, lust, easily and falls out again just as fast. As a lover, he’s passionate, seductive, enthusiastic and ardent. When he’s focused on you, you will be a rabbit caught in his headlights. He’s as persuasive as a mint julep on a hot day, and you will be so charmed by his easy manner that you may end up doing things you would never have considered.
The Knight of Wands does like to ratchet up notches on his bedpost. So be careful when he asks to take sexy photos. He has no moral filter and not a great deal of honor, so think long and hard before acquiescing to his demands.
Occasionally a Knight of Wands becomes smitten. The object of his attraction is generally unavailable or way out of reach. Her unavailability is her attraction. He will keep on courting and wooing, persuading and pushing until either he gets what he wants and resumes his usual pattern, or is distracted by some other pretty flower and gives up.
How To Handle a Knight of Wands
If you are up for a passionate fling, then the Knight of Wands is your eager partner. If you are looking for a flirtatious dalliance, he is definitely up for it. If you are wanting a dangerous liaison, then again, the Knight of Wands is perfect for you.
The Knight of Wands calls you up and says, “We’re leaving for the Maldives, you coming?” If you want him, you’ll go. There’s no hesitating. And that’s how it is with him. You are either as impulsive as he is, or you are not with him at all. The only exception is, if you are higher in the social stratosphere than he is. Then he’ll be your poodle.
The best thing you can do if you find yourself falling for a Knight of Wands type, is to keep your expectations at a realistic level. There’s no point in dreaming about white weddings, babies and a cute little home. He won’t go for it. And if he does, you’ll be disappointed. Unless he is able to make a swift transition from immature Knight into responsible King, you’ll be left holding the baby and paying the mortgage.
