Happy New Year to you all. We’re so happy you popped into Lunar Café today. We have some quick and simple tarot spreads to share with you, all based on releasing the stagnant energies of 2015 and welcoming in the bright and shiny 2016.
New Year Tarot Spread 1.
It’s a Leap Year, so let’s start with a spread that tells us what will propel us forward this coming spring.
Shuffle, cut and lay down three cards, progressing upward like a staircase.
The first position is: My current platform.
The second card represents: What will cause me to leap forward?
The third card is: My landing stage.
Example reading using the beautiful Songs for the Journey Home deck.
1. Current platform – 9th Wave Song (Nine of Cups)
2. What will cause me to leap forward? – 2nd Flame Song (Two of Wands)
3. My landing stage – 1st Earth Song (Ace of Pentacles).
The first card shows the seeker is in a very good place at present. The Nine of Cups tells us she is still feeling the warm, happy vibes from the holidays. It’s very likely that at the time of the reading she is in the midst of New Year celebrations. However, the number nine means the current phase is coming to a close, and a new life stage will materialize quite soon.
The second card indicates she already has plans for the coming year, but may find it difficult to actually get going. Twos often represent a waiting phase, when plans need to be perfected and outside factors have to fall into place before progress is made. So the seeker is forced to remain still for a little while longer. When the time is right, she can take that jump.
The third card is the Ace of Pentacles, which fits in really well in that Aces are about new beginnings, new projects, new jobs, even a new home. A positive card that reassures the seeker she is taking the right steps from a good place into an even better one.
New Year Tarot Spread 2.
Our second New Year spread focuses on hidden factors that we need to be aware of. These could be anything, such as other people’s influences, underlying positive or negative energy, or even something we are doing that could be thwarting our progress.
Shuffle, cut and lay out three cards, again in a left to right staircase pattern.
Position one, on the left, represents: What/who is helping or hindering me?
Card two is: What should I be aware of that I can’t see?
Third card is: How do I make these influences work for me?
Example reading using the Gilded Tarot.
1. What/who is helping or hindering me? – Six of Swords
2. What should I be aware of that I can’t see? – Queen of Wands
3. How do I make these influences work for me? – The Fool.
The Six of Swords suggests that there is a gentle current of energy which will help the seeker progress. There may be frustration that it feels as though forward movement is very slow or even delayed. However, patience will be rewarded. The seeker should know that this period of time is just what is necessary for future success. Things can’t be hurried right now.
The Queen of Wands is often a real person. She may represent someone, presently unknown, who is moving into the seeker’s life. Alternatively, and with some interaction with the seeker to ascertain the facts, this card might mean she has to take on some aspects of this Queen’s personality. She needs to be more outgoing, more confident in her own abilities, and act courageously until it becomes second nature.
The Fool is a great card to appear – it points out that none of the foregoing needs to cause any anxiety at all. That the slow progression indicated by the Six of Swords is a time that should be savored and enjoyed in the certain knowledge that all is, and will be, well. It shows that the high energy Queen of Wands should be embraced, either as a real person or as new characteristics and behavior to be taken on by the seeker. Its overall message is to chill out, relax and let things happen as they will.
New Year Tarot Spread 3.
Our final three-card tarot spread is a simple timeline to indicate how the year will unfold. Each card represents four months. Again, use the staircase layout.
The example reading uses the Tarot of the New Vision.
1. January through April – Ace of Swords
2. May through August – Ace of Pentacles
3. September through December – Four of Chalices (Cups)
Two Aces, cool. The first card, the Ace of Swords indicates the overall energy of the first four months of the year are filled with clarity and understanding. The suit of Swords is focused on thought and communication so it will be advantageous for the seeker to pay attention to these aspects. For instance, if she is looking for a new job, then it is important for her to give the right impression; make sure her CV is perfectly presented and her interview techniques are honed.
The second four-month period is represented by the Ace of Pentacles, the card of manifestation. Whatever the main focus is this year, then this card points to it coming into the realm of reality during the summer. Relationships are cemented, new projects get off the ground and, if the seeker is house-hunting, then the perfect home will come on the market at this time and at an affordable price.
The last four months of the year are dominated by the Four of Cups. This card indicates a bit of a slump. Perhaps the energy of the previous eight months has taken their toll emotionally. It’s not a bad card, but simply means if the seeker wants to follow up on opportunities (usually of the emotional variety), then she has to be prepared to make an effort and look for them. They are there. Another possibility is that the seeker has simply run out of steam, and she needs to pay attention to her health, both physical and spiritual. She could improve her diet and take a vitamin supplement or tonic.
So those are our New Year tarot spreads. You have probably realized that these three spreads can be laid out as one large nine-card reading – a revealing and useful road map for the year ahead.
All the best to you and yours for 2016.
