The royal court cards in tarot are the personality cards of the deck. There are 16 of them and they are grouped in families according to their suit. So there are four Wands, four Cups, four Swords and four Pentacles. Therefore there are also four of each King, Queen, Knight and Page. Each royal has a distinct personality which is governed by their suit and rank. It’s not often that real people fall into neat categories like this, but you can usually determine which is their dominant type. Let’s take a look at the tarot court card lovers.
The Kings of the Tarot and their Love Potential
As the most mature court cards, the Kings are at their peak, both intellectually and physically. They have reached the stage in their lives where behavior, preferences, and habits are fully-formed. Kings radiate energy like the sun; their attention is focused outward.
King of Wands
If you are with a King of Wands type, you will know that he is most definitely an alpha male. There are no half measure with this one. He is assertive, strong-willed, charismatic, and temperamental. As a lover he is passionate and attentive. Yet, when he gets irritated and you’re in the firing line, you’d better duck. These flare-ups of temper rarely last long though; they are merely a cloud passing across the sun. As a lover he is adventurous and willing to try anything. If the chemistry is there you’ll be transported to a whole new level.
King of Cups
The King of Cups is gentle, understanding, and open-hearted. He is sweet and thoughtful and is the sort of man you turn to for advice. Yet he is not without his hang-ups. The King of Cups is prone to drinking too much (or some other detrimental habit). Cups is a feminine suit, so he is likely to be empathetic and intuitive. As a lover he prefers routine and could be somewhat shy of trying anything new. But if you are looking for a deep emotional connection, this might be it. If it’s a quick fling you want, this guy is not it.
King of Swords
The King of Swords is highly focused, authoritative, and determined. He has a sharp mind and sharp wit. Some people would find his detachment a little scary. He’s not great at expressing emotions and can sometimes be controlling. However, he has a softer side and when he falls in love it’s usually forever. He has a certain neediness in the practical department. At work he is the consummate professional; at home he can barely find his way to the kitchen. As a lover he is efficient, and knows what he likes. And what he likes is to give up all that control and have you take over.
King of Pentacles
The King of Pentacles is good fun. He enjoys the company of other people, although can be a little show-offy. This king works hard and plays hard too. He likes to enjoy all the pleasures of life and the results of his hard work. As a lover he is generous, considerate and earthy. However, he is not given to displays of emotion and tends to shy away from any ‘messy feelings stuff’. However, a couple of bottles of red wine, a massage, followed by a romp in front of a log fire is bliss for him.
The Tarot Queens and Love
The Queens are generally assumed to be women of all ages. They might still be at the beginning of their exploration of relationships, or they may have been married for decades. The energy of Queens can be likened to the moon. They reflect light back to you.
Queen of Wands
Feisty, extrovert, ambitious, and sometimes amoral, the Queen of Wands is flamboyant and has a big personality. Always the center of attention, she is able to rise to the top of her profession. However, she is also a sensitive and loyal friend and lover as long as her commitment is reciprocated. As lover she is passionate, warm, romantic, and very sexy. If you are younger than she is, she’ll delight in teaching you her favorite techniques.
Queen of Cups
The Queen of Cups is loving, attentive, intuitive, creative, and a really, really good listener. She isn’t terribly logical, as she makes all her decisions based on how she feels. If you’re down, she’ll know it; you can’t hide your feelings from her highly tuned emotional antenna. As a lover she instinctively knows how to make you happy. The key to unleashing her wild side is to woo her with pretty words.
Queen of Swords
The intellectual, perceptive, tell-it-like-it-is Queen of Swords is not everyone’s cup of tea, but those who tough it out and get past her thorny barriers, will discover a well-balanced and loving individual. She does have a tendency to compartmentalize her life, so colleagues will never see this gentler side. As a lover she can be surprisingly needy. That veneer of invincibility is not present when she is in her sweetheart’s arms. When she’s really relaxed, she’ll surprise you in the most delightful ways.
Queen of Pentacles
This Queen is practical, helpful, maternal, and represents all that is comforting and secure about home. She is just as reliable when at work; she’s the anchor that holds any organization steady. As a lover, she is enthusiastic and pragmatic. She sees sex as an extension of her daily life, and if it’s outdoors on a bed of bluebells, all the better.
The Tarot Knights as Court Card Lovers
The Knights are usually young men in their twenties/thirties. They are just reaching maturity but might not be quite there yet. They are still finding their feet in the realm of personal relationships.
Knight of Wands
Lusty and liberated, the Knight of Wands is the epitome of the saying, “So many women, so little time.” Being faithful is just not in his nature, so don’t kid yourself that you are the one. As a lover, he likes… well, everything. There’s nothing out of bounds with this guy. Sometimes, well, you know, it gets a bit too much.
Knight of Cups
The in-love-with-love Knight of Cups is very romantic. In fact you will never meet a more romantic type. However, he is more concerned with the impression he makes than in sustaining a long-lasting partnership. As a lover, he’s tender yet adventurous. He may be bi-sexual and enjoy cross-dressing.
Knight of Swords
The Knight of Swords is usually in a frightful hurry… and the same applies to his personal relationships. Quick to fall in love; quick to fall out again, he tends to have a series of affairs. As a lover, his propensity for speed may be disappointing. However, if you can persuade him to apply the brakes, things might improve.
Knight of Pentacles
Much misunderstood, the Knight of Pentacles is one of the sexiest court cards… he just doesn’t talk about it much. He’s ruled by the element of earth, which means sex is a very natural thing to him. Dependable, loyal and true, as a lover, he will always take time to make sure you are happy and having a good time. What’s not to like?
The Tarot Pages and Love
The Pages, for the purposes of this article are assumed to be young men or women at the start of their adult lives. As court card lovers, they are just developing their potential.
Page of Wands
The Page of Wands is at the beginning of his or her romantic adventures. And, oh boy, s/he’s making the most of it. If there’s one court card that represents promiscuity, then this is it. As a lover, s/he is engrossed in tasting the fruit on every tree, so don’t expect for one second to keep him or her close to you.
The Page of Cups
This page is not in a hurry at all, so it’s possible that they are still a virgin. Cautious about who they share their love with, it means you have to treat them like cut glass. They are quite fragile, emotionally, and possibly immature. As a lover, s/he will be nervous and wary. You will have to gain their confidence and, please, don’t be casual about their feelings.
Page of Swords
The Page of Swords, being one of the logical family, will have given a lot of thought to their love life. They probably think they know exactly what they want in a partner, so be prepared to be assessed. Yet, s/he is still very young so doesn’t really have the experience to know what they prefer. S/he may be ‘on-trend edgy’, but is secretly yearning for a picket-fence life. As a lover, s/he is willing but longs to be tutored.
Page of Pentacles
You will have met your Page of Pentacles at university for sure. Immersed their studies, nevertheless, their innate curiosity will be impossible to suppress. However, s/he has a built-in common-sense that will stand them in good stead in any potential romance. S/he will want to make sure that all is well before making any commitment. As a lover s/he is enthusiastic, yet ‘bumbly’. Have patience; s/he’s a fast learner.
So, how was it for you? Did you find your court card lover here? Is it possible s/he is a mix of two or more cards? Do you recognize yourself?
