Introduction
The mist has melted away; the veil has lifted, and the sun is shining. It’s almost hard to remember all that confusion, indecision and illusion that you experienced as you navigated through the Moon’s influence. There is a general feeling of relief and happiness all around. The bad stuff has happened, and you got through it. Now you’re ready to play, to make hay and have your season in the sun.
The Sun gives life, vitality and sustenance, but it can also have a destructive effect. You can have too much of a good thing. But let’s not worry about that now; instead we should fill our hearts with joy and make the most of this glorious gift.
Stories
In Hinduism, Surya, the Sun, is the Supreme Light and is often depicted driving a chariot through the heavens pulled by seven horses. He is sometimes called Mitra, which means “friend” because he is the sustainer of life and, therefore, a friend of life on Earth. Surya is occasionally considered to be quite unfriendly as he brings drought, but he’s a positive force in the overall scheme of things.
Helios, the Greek personification of the sun, also drove a chariot pulled by fiery horses. Helios had a son, Phaeton, who stole the chariot, lost control and set the Earth on fire. This may be connected to the belief that the whole Universe is periodically destroyed by a great conflagration known as Ekpyrosis. Interestingly, one of the proponents of Ekpyrosis, a philosopher called Chrysippus, was also a great supporter of divination.
General Meanings
If the Sun appears in your spread, then you can let out a great cheer, especially if it turns up in an outcome or result position. The tarot Sun represents achievement, victory, happiness, abundance, positivity and confidence.
Anything that was causing you distress, pain or anxiety will improve. In fact, everything will improve — health, finances, relationships, work and energy levels. You will feel full of vitality and joy. People around you will feel happy to be with you. Your enthusiasm will sky-rocket. Projects you’ve been mulling over but putting off now seem doable. In fact, your mantra is “Everything is easy for me.” Repeat several times a day and watch what happens.
Travel is favorable at this time, whether for a break or connected with work. Make the most of your opportunities to visit new places. Or simply relax at home in the sunshine.
If the Sun is reversed, it means that you could experience delays or loss. You know you should be feeling good, and you can’t quite pinpoint why you aren’t. Other people around you are happy, but you don’t feel the same way. It feels as though you are unable to extricate yourself from a web that’s holding you back. Success is almost within reach; you can feel it but just can’t get there yet.
Imagery
The Waite Sun depicts a naked child riding a white pony. His arms are outstretched as he enjoys the feeling of warmth upon his skin. In his left hand, he holds a flowing orange banner. Behind and above the child, the sky is blue, and the sun gazes down benignly. Four sunflowers peep over a stone wall in the background.
Note that there is also a white horse in the tarot Death card. White horses represent purity of spirit.
