One of the lessons contained in the Five of Swords is to know when to turn our back on a situation and walk away. Here, then in the Six of Swords, we are continuing that process. This time we have even more determination and are moving forward to begin again. Creating the future instead of allowing circumstances to create it by default. As with all the tarot Sixes, the Six of Swords represents getting ourselves to a more balanced state after a time of challenge and turbulence.
In the Rider-Waite Tarot, this card is illustrated by a sad scene of a man punting a small boat across a lake. His wife and child, together with their meager possessions, sit huddled together, heads bowed. The boat carries six downward-pointing swords, hinting that the family have accepted their problems and are taking them on their journey. The water to the rear of the boat is choppy while ahead it is calm. On the horizon, land awaits.
The same card in the Robin Wood Tarot is similar to the Rider-Waite, but ahead can be seen a cave, hollowed out of the island. In the darkness of the cave shines a star, which shows that the little family is moving toward recovery, hope, and a new life.
The Six of Swords represent a gradual recovery. The boat in the image is steady and well-balanced; therefore the journey will be a smooth one. As Swords is the suit of the mind, this card shows that using your controlled thoughts to overcome your negative emotion (the water) is the right thing at this moment. You may not be able to discard or ignore the problems, but you can carry them with you to deal with as soon as you are able.
In a reading, this card should be taken as a positive sign that you are moving in the right direction. You may have to make a difficult choice but in fact, there is no choice; there’s only one thing to do, and that is to move forward. It matters not that the journey is slower than you’d like. Go with it, feel relief wash over you, and expect better things up ahead.
Interpretations in Various Areas of Life
You may have suffered a setback or a challenge. Put that behind you now and focus on rebuilding from right where you are. Use the current situation as a platform to move to a higher level of achievement. It’s possible that you may have to leave your current place of work and move to one that suits you better. It could feel like a backward step but, in the long term, it will prove to be the better option.
If you are seeking work, it’s possible that you may have to travel a little farther to find the right employment. Your daily commute could be more taxing than expected. Eventually, you may have to move home.
Your relationship is improving. There may have been discord, unrest, and even betrayal in the recent past, but this card indicates acceptance and the slow rebuilding of trust. It’s not going to happen overnight; patience is required on both sides. Remember that there could be innocent parties involved that require attention and nurturing.
If you are single but looking for love, then know that recent events are gone for good. Put the past behind you. Clear your head and start again.
Saving regularly is hard to do if money is tight. However, the simple process of saving a little money every month will help you to feel more abundant. Equally, make an effort to reduce your debts over and above the regular agreed payment. This, too, will put you in control of your money.
You’re on the mend after dealing with a health issue. Maybe a back problem or possibly surgery. The Six of Swords indicates that you are convalescing well. Keep doing what you are doing and the road to recovery will be smooth. Don’t overdo it. If you are healthy, then ensure that you continue to exercise regularly.
Stop struggling, let the current turn your small boat around and feel the relief. The Six of Swords is about giving up the idea that you ‘should’ do this or you ‘ought’ to do that. Just let go and see how easy life becomes.
