What is Vedic Astrology?
In the western world, we use a type of astrology based on the tropical zodiac. Astrological charts are created by using the changing position of the sun about the Earth, or to be more accurate, the perspective of the sun from the ever-moving Earth. Vedic astrology (or Jyotisa astrology) is based on the sidereal zodiac, i.e. the fixed positions of the constellations as seen from Earth. The origins of Vedic astrology are lost in the mists of time — some estimate it being developed as early as 2,500 BC.
Vedic astrology is complex and mathematically sophisticated. Proponents of the system say that it offers a deeper understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, how life unfolds and how we can meet the challenges before us.
Jyotisa, the more common term for Vedic astrology, is divided into three: Indian astrology, which is the calculation of the position of the planets, forms the basis of the Hindu calendar. Mundane astrology is the prediction of events that will affect whole countries or the world in general. Predictive astrology is connected to events and decisions in an individual’s life.
Vedic Sun Signs
Vedic sun signs are different to Western signs. For example, if you were born on the 5th March, you’d be a Pisces in the tropical system. Under Vedic astrology, your sign would be Aquarius. See the chart below to discover your Vedic sign.
Your Vedic Element
As with western astrology, Vedic signs are associated with one of the four elements: fire, water, air and earth. If you were born on the cusp of two signs, then you will be influenced by two elements.
Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius – active, outgoing.
Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces – passive, intuitive.
Air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius – active – thoughtful.
Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn – passive – practical.
Vedic vs. Western
Vedic practitioners claim that their method pays more attention to karmic influences and also accurately foretells future events and influences. Western astrology focuses more on the psychological make-up of people and is less accurate at predicting the future.
Western astrology uses a round chart while Vedic charts are square.
Back in 285 AD, both systems were aligned astronomically, but because of “precession of the equinoxes”, the signs in the western method have shifted one degree every 72 years, making about 23-24 degrees difference between the two disciplines.
Vedic Signs Characteristics
People born under the fiery Vedic sign of Aries are outgoing, adventurous and up for anything. They tend to like sport, and they also like to be lazy at times. It’s all or nothing! Physically, they often have thick, wavy hair and are usually of a slim build. In their career they are ambitious and willing to take a risk – they are usually successful. In love, they can be quite dominant, but are romantic and loving at the same time. They like to get their way.
The Vedic sign of Taurus indicates that this person is gentle and down-to-earth. They are reliable and trustworthy, not given to flights of fancy or temper tantrums. Physically, they are short to medium in height, and often very good-looking. They do well in jobs and careers where a steady temperament and a measured progression is important. They are not high-fliers but can make it to the top at their own speed. Romantically speaking, they are quite shy and enjoy sharing alone-time with their partner.
Quick thinking, witty and charming are signature traits of Vedic Gemini. They are full of ideas and plans, and they love to entertain others… and others love to be entertained by them. Physically, they are usually tall, willowy and may be unusual but attractive looking. They do well in careers that involve a lot of interaction with others, especially where they can be the star of the show. They are restless, however, and tend to change jobs a lot. Flirtatious and romantic, they never have any problems in attracting partners. Loyalty may be an issue because they are such butterflies. They rarely mate for life.
Those born under the Vedic sign of Cancer are sensitive and emotional. They almost always make decisions on how they feel. They enjoy familiar surroundings and feeling secure. They often have round faces, big eyes, and large hands and feet. Career-wise, they are often found in the caring professions, making good nurses, social workers and teachers. Cancerians are romantic by nature, loyal and loving. They are happiest in a long-term, steady relationship.
People with the Vedic sign Leo like to be in charge. They are dominant, ambitious and power-seeking. They are quite often short in stature although not in nature. Their weakness is being susceptible to flattery by others. Leos like to work anywhere they can demonstrate their authority. Armed forces, police, local or national government would suit them well. When they fall in love, they are in it for the distance – as long as their partner can accept their dominant tendencies.
Neat is the best way to describe a Vedic Virgo. They are ambitious and hard-working with a pragmatic outlook. They are tall and conservative in their looks and dress. They do well in any profession they set their heart on. They are unlikely to chop and change. They prefer their love-life to be planned out so they can see where they are going and what their responsibilities will be. Once settled, they are loyal and faithful.
The Vedic sign of Libra indicates that a peaceful, fair life is preferred. Although friendly and sociable, they can incline to moodiness at times. They have great intellectual powers, a quick wit and are fair-minded to a fault. Medium to tall with a slender build is typical of a Vedic Libran. They take their time in selecting their ideal partner, once settled, they make good life partners.
Secretive, dark and sexy are the most accurate terms to describe a Vedic Scorpio. Strong-willed and determined also figure in their personality. The eyes have it, so be careful you don’t become caught in their spell. They need a career in which they can satisfy their endless curiosity, follow their impulses and be as outspoken as they like. They make great writers, as their active imagination works in their favor, and they can explore the ‘dark side’ in as much depth as they want. Their love life can be messy. They are passionate and devoted as long as their partner feels the same.
Independent, courageous and ambitious, Vedic Sagittarius is difficult to ignore. Their enthusiasm and general loudness are unavoidable. They are usually the center of attention at any gathering. Usually quite tall, they have a tendency to put on weight as they get older. Vedic Sagittarius usually do well where they are in the public eye – law, lecturing, and trading are good areas for them. Romance-wise, they are attractive to others and rarely lack a partner. When settled, they are dependable and sincere.
Vedic Capricorn people are ambitious and practical. Once set on a path they are an unstoppable force, albeit in a restrained and dignified manner. They have a well-hidden, spiritual side and cane be surprisingly intuitive. Physically, they are usually of medium height, handsome rather than beautiful, slim with the likelihood of weight gain later. Career-wise, they prefer a steady, financially rewarding job, where their abilities are appreciated. Appreciation is very important to Vedic Capricorn. They are not as romantic as other signs, preferring the stability that marriage can offer. They are extremely loyal and faithful.
Highly sociable, talkative and gregarious, the Vedic Aquarian is well loved by all who know him or her. People’s eyes light up when they enter the party. Often tall and gangly, they have a penetrating gaze. Aquarius does well in any sector, but will shine in entertainment and travel-related professions. They enjoy autonomy, so don’t expect them to always do what they are told. They are romantic, exciting and unconventional lovers. They enjoy surprising their partner, so life with one is rarely routine.
Interesting, charming, and philosophic is the best way to describe the unusual and artistic Vedic Pisces. They have an alternative view to life compared to most. Usually calm-tempered, they can have, and cause, problems when alcohol is flowing. Pisces is the sign most likely to suffer from addiction. They are drawn to professions involving art and music, but you are also likely to meet them on campus as they make good, slightly eccentric, teachers. They see romantic love as a form of spirituality and believe firmly in the concept of soul-mates.
