Synastry in astrology is the study of two peoples’ birth charts in order to assess their long-term compatibility.
Put in simple terms, synastry shows how one person’s energies interact with and impact on their partner’s. Analyzing charts in this way is a complex business and best left to a professional astrologer. However, the subject of synastry is fascinating so we’ll take a look at how it works.
It is important to remember that synastry cannot predict whether a relationship will succeed or fail – that is down to the individuals concerned. What it can do is highlight areas of compatibility, where couples are likely to share the same viewpoints and attitudes, and also areas where problems could manifest. Discovering that there are problematic areas is not a bad thing – they are simply challenges to be overcome. Most couples will face challenges in their relationship sooner or later – a synastry analysis simply points to where and possibly why these differences occur – and knowing why is halfway to fixing them.
A good astrologist will spend a lot of time comparing birth charts, making a composite chart, and may also create a chart for the relationship itself, using the day and time the relationship started. They will use comparisons and overlays. It’s exceedingly complex and many rely on computer calculations to provide the data, which they then analyze.
The key to synastry analysis is calculating the interaspects of planets in both parties’ charts – this means taking into account conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions.
Conjunction means that two planets appear very close in a chart, within six to ten degrees of each other. Sextile planets are within 60 degrees – two signs apart – remember that each sign is 30 degrees of the 360 total of the astrological ellipse. Square is 90 degrees – three signs apart. Trine is 120 degrees – four signs apart and opposition is 180 degrees – six signs apart.
Synastry also compares the elements of each chart, noting where combined elements are positive, neutral or opposing.
Where the planets fall in the ten houses also has a major impact on the synastry analysis. For example, if one partner’s Venus falls in the other’s seventh house (marriage and significant partnerships) then these two are likely to make a good long-lasting relationship.
Talking of Venus, when analyzing charts for synastry, most astrologers will pay a lot of attention to Venus interaspects. Venus, the Goddess of love, tells astrologers a lot about the individual’s attitudes towards relationships. The placement of Venus in a birth chart can sometimes explain why we are attracted to certain individuals. When Venus is observed creating aspects in the other person’s chart, (conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition) it can give a lot of information about the relationship prospects. Couples who share favorable Venus interaspects are very likely to be able to maintain a long-term relationship and keep the romance alive.
We can’t cover all possible planetary interaspects here but we can take a look at how Venus works with the other planets to give a basic idea how synastry is able to analyze a relationship. Bear in mind that the kind of aspect also makes a difference. Sextiles and trines indicate areas of agreement and cooperation, whereas Squares and oppositions will show more dynamic, tension-laden and possibly conflicting, interaction.
Venus and the Inner Planets
The interaspects between inner planets are far more immediate and can give information about how the relationship is likely to fare in the short term. These are the major indicators of compatibility.
Venus – Sun interaspects indicate a relationship with a great deal of harmony and contentment. It might be compared to a happy afternoon spent at the beach.
Venus – Moon interaspects show a couple who need to spend a great deal of time in each other’s company. They are happiest when together.
Venus – Mercury interaspects show common interests based on good communication between the couple.
Venus – Venus interaspects mean that there is a lovely synergy in this relationship. The compatibility score is high.
Venus – Mars interaspects indicate physical attraction mixed with possible conflicts, making this a volatile combination.
Venus – Jupiter interaspects show that this relationship will experience good fortune especially if the aspects are sextile and trine. There is a lot of tolerance and forgiveness between this couple. It gets more challenging with square and opposition aspects when high expectation can take over.
Venus and the Outer Planets
The outer planets have a far less immediate effect but are very important because they reflect long-term dynamics that may not appear to be present in the early stages of a relationship.
Venus – Saturn interaspects will indicate a possible power struggle between the couple. This will impact their love-life and passion for each other, making the relationship alternate between hot and cold.
Venus- Uranus interaspects may be problematic long-term. There can be excitement and thrills but occasionally one partner may be switched on to the other, while the other is off. This makes for a volatile, erratic partnership, which might not be able to withstand the challenges.
Venus – Neptune interaspects make for an interesting dynamic. The relationship can start off passionate and consuming but later it loses that excitement. If the couple can get past this ‘blah’ stage, they may well discover that passion reignites later on and the relationship undergoes a new lease on life.
Venus – Pluto interaspects show a roller-coaster ride of a relationship. Extreme passion, fiery interactions and intense emotions are all characteristics of this match. It takes a strong couple to handle these challenges.
Venus – Chiron interaspects indicates a match made to last. This couple are bathed in an energy that transforms both of them and heals both parties of any pain sustained in previous relationships. They feel as though they belong together.
