Numerology is a metaphysical discipline like astrology and tarot. The origins of numerology are lost to us, although many credit the Greek philosopher and teacher, Pythagoras, as the ‘father of numerology’. Pythagoras was convinced that the universe is made of numbers, and that each number had its numerological characteristics.

There is another numerological system called Chaldean, which is more accurate than the Pythagorean system but is more complex and is restricted to numbers one through eight. We’re going to show you how to calculate your name number using the Pythagorean system.
How to Calculate Your Name Number
Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number from one through nine.
To calculate your name number, write out the digits represented by the letters of the name you are commonly known by, and add them together. Continue to add triple and double digits until they are reduced to a single number. Should your double digits be 11, 22 or 33, then pay special attention to them as they are called ‘Master Numbers’ and have characteristics of their own.
We have calculated Alex Smith’s name number as an example.
You can see that Alex Smith reduces to 3. However, you can play around with the numbers – ‘Alex’ reduces to 6 and so does ‘Smith’, so the number six is also significant to this person.
Not only can you use numerology to calculate your name number, you can also use it in many real-life situations. Check your house or apartment number, as well as your phone number. Work out your romantic partner’s number to find out if you are compatible. Notice how often a combination, group or single number shows up for you over and over.
Birth Numbers
Another important number is your birth number, calculated by adding together all the digits in your birth date. For example, Alex Smith was born on November 30th, 1998, so Alex’s birth number is 1+1+3+0+1+9+9+8 = 32 = 3+2 = 5.
You can delve into numerology in great depth, and we’ve included some online resources at the end of this article for you to further explore this fascinating topic.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 1
People associated with the number one are natural leaders and innovators. They are extremely focused and self-directed. On the flip side, they can be demanding and egotistical. Number 1 people do well in professional employment where they can demonstrate their leadership skills. They are also highly suited to running their own business.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 2
Number twos are empathetic and harmonious; the peacekeepers. They are gentle, warm and helpful. They cannot bear cruelty or unfairness. They love balance and symmetry. Their negative aspects are usually the result of their positives: they give so much so easily that they can often put themselves last, which leads to resentment.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 3
Number threes are creative types. They are able to reach out to others and make connections. Life is fun for them as they tend to live in the moment. They are usually popular among their peers. Their downsides are that they can be somewhat superficial and unable to follow through on their creative endeavors.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 4
Fours are stable and reliable. They work hard and long, and are happy to do so. They focus on things that give them the security they need. They are super-organized, honest and realistic. They generally don’t like change and can be awkward and stubborn at times.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 5
Fives people can be challenging and they often have to face challenges too. They are quite capable of dealing with difficulties. They see life as an adventure, which can have detrimental effects on their personal relationships as they find it hard to settle. As they get older, they can sometimes feel as though they haven’t fulfilled their potential.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 6
People connected to six are similar in some ways to the twos. They are balanced and generous, seeing themselves as the carers of society. They are excellent with children as they are very much in tune with their own inner child. Like the twos, they become resentful if taken for granted.

Numerological Characteristics of the Number 7
Sevens are seekers. They have great intellectual capacity and are interested in many things. They tend to wander through life in a solitary fashion, some dreaming, some following a spiritual path that only they can tread. They appear fascinating to others but find it difficult to maintain long-term relationships.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 8
Eighters are reliable, dependable and organized. These are the people who can put projects together, round up the resources they need and put the whole plan into action. They can become a little one-tracked, so must pay attention to the emotional needs of others.
Numerological Characteristics of the Number 9
Nines care about the world and the people in it. They are selfless, sharing and committed. They are also very spiritual. Sometimes they will follow a materialistic path, but will often give it all up to devote themselves to spiritual matters. Their negative aspects sometimes manifest in satisfaction and frustration due to being unable to identify their real purpose in life.
Master Number 11
Those who have the number 11 in their name or birth number are life’s important teachers. They have a lot of potential. They are extremely spiritual and often have psychic abilities. Combined with the number two aspect of their personalities, their gentle influence is a force to be reckoned with.
Master Number 22
Master number 22 are the people who can build upon the characteristics of two, four and eleven. Everything that those numbers have, 22s have in spades. They are facilitators, achievers and are incredibly powerful creators. You might find a 22 in a studio, creating art from almost nothing. Or you might discover them assembling components. They like to work with their hands. However, any 22, in whatever routine task they are engaged in, is also exploring the deepest secrets of life and the universe. It is said that Jesus was a Master 22.

Master Number 33
These people know no boundaries. They can do anything they want to. They are the master teachers, the spiritual leaders, those who understand life and its meaning. Those carrying the number 33 have significant work to do. They are at a more advanced stage of spiritual development than most people.
