We have passed in front of Justice and learned the importance of fairness, good behavior and maintaining balance in all that we do, say and think. Now we appear to be at a crossroads. What happens next?
The Hanged Man is one of those cards that causes confusion. Some are even afraid of its imagery. It is full of contradiction and often gets misinterpreted in readings. The card is chock full of symbolism and esoteric meaning so is well worth studying in depth.
The movie Groundhog Day is a classic example of a Hanged Man situation. The main character, an arrogant, celebrity TV weather presenter called Phil Connors finds himself living the same day over and over. Life is an endless round of the same repeated events. At first Connors takes advantage and cheats, steals and seduces his way through the days with no fear of the consequences because there are none. Completely overwhelmed with boredom, he even tries to kill himself. Then his character begins to change, and gradually his day becomes full of self-education, good deeds and, of course, love. Not until he has completely let go of his old self is he able to move on. Once that has happened, the day changes and normal time resumes. Connors has stripped himself of his arrogance and has found a deeper meaning to life.
The Hanged Man is associated with the Norse god, Odin, who hangs himself as a sacrifice from the tree, Yggdrasil (supposedly representing the universe on earth). After nine days, he is close to death but suddenly spies some objects on the ground beneath him. They turn out to be pebbles carved with symbols – the runic alphabet. Odin is magically restored and goes on to present the runes to the world.
Like Phil Connors in Groundhog Day, here right now is just how it’s meant to be. We have to accept the current situation before anything can change. Once we understand we are servants of our ego, we can release the ego at any time and manifest the changes we’ve been looking for. In other words, letting go of control gives us back our control. To be free, we must give up the attachments that hold us in one place.
Consider letting go of some things – give away anything that no longer serves you. Stop taking part in certain activities if they are simply a habit. Make sure you get plenty of rest. Spend a little time just staring into space. Empty your mind and feel your problems melt away.
The Hanged Man can cause consternation when viewed for the first time. Then a closer look reveals the man is not dead – he’s hanging upside down from one foot rather than being executed by a noose around his neck. The man looks quite peaceful; he has already accepted that he is unable to do anything about his predicament. He can make small physical changes to make himself more comfortable. His hands are bent at the elbows and held behind his back, and his free leg is also bent and crossed behind his right leg. His body forms a cross.
He wears a blue tunic with red leggings, and a halo circles his head; perhaps he has already experienced enlightenment. The tau cross from which he hangs is sprouting leaves. It is thought that he has placed himself in this rather awkward position voluntarily.
Interpretations in Various Areas of Life
You feel as though you are not progressing as you should. Perhaps you have been passed over for a promotion. If you are self-employed, then you aren’t experiencing any growth in numbers of clients. You could feel as if your creativity is blocked.
Simply let it be. Pay attention to the vibes you are giving out. Take advice from the Wheel of Fortune and move to your still, calm center. Release your anxieties about work and simply do and be the best you can.
Nothing is happening. You haven’t found a meaningful relationship, or the one you are in feels stale. You want to stir things up a little. Don’t – remain at ease with the way things are. If your current partner is not suitable, pretty soon he or she will leave. If you haven’t yet found love, stop chasing it and focus on another area of your life. Love will find you.
Put your spending on hold. Pay your bills and essentials. The flow of money energy may have temporarily slowed, so cut your non-essential outgoings accordingly. Do not worry about it as this will cause the slowdown to continue. Instead, tell yourself that it is just for the time being. The money will begin to flow again as soon as you relax about the issue.
Alternatively, one income source dries up. Again, do not fret. Remain open to new opportunities and in the meantime curb excessive purchases.
Your current treatment or health regime is not making you any better. It’s time to look at the problem from a different angle. Consider other options such as diet, movement, essential vitamins and minerals. Worry is counter-productive, so don’t do it. Focus your attention on things that make you feel good. Relax and soon the answer will make itself known to you. If needs be, take time off work to rest properly. You will get better.
If you are physically healthy, then consider a time of relaxation to ward off the grumbles. Depression could be a problem so give yourself what you need to reach a place of well-being again.
The Hanged Man invites you to understand that the key to fulfillment is in letting go. Acceptance, non-resistance, going with the flow is the path to happiness. Pushing against what you don’t agree with does not solve anything. Forgive others and more importantly, forgive yourself.
If you are looking for a spiritual path, just wait and one will be shown to you. There is no rush; nothing needs to happen apart from you simply relaxing. Think about taking up meditation or yoga to encourage the feeling of inner peace
